What to do with old tablets: check their next useful role
An old tablet may still be useful, but the right next step depends on its condition and the software it supports. Check the device before deciding to keep it, sell it, give it away or recycle it.
Check whether keeping it solves a real need
Before assigning an old tablet a new job, check that the required apps still work and review the manufacturer's software-support information for that exact model. A reading device, video screen or occasional browsing tablet needs to suit the person who will actually use it.
Look at the screen, charging connector and battery behaviour. A tablet that is frustrating to use may simply become clutter in another room. Avoid buying accessories for a new use until you have checked compatibility and confirmed that the tablet works reliably enough for that purpose.
Identify it properly for a sale or donation
Record the full model, storage and whether it is Wi-Fi-only or has mobile connectivity. Include the screen condition, known faults, charger and any keyboard or stylus you intend to supply. Similar-looking iPads or Galaxy tablets can be different generations with different capacities.
For several tablets, list them individually by model and quantity. State if they are company-managed, locked or unable to start. Ask the prospective buyer or recipient whether it can use the equipment before arranging delivery; neither resale nor donation guarantees acceptance.
Protect accounts and information before transfer
Check your backup or transfer before resetting the tablet. Follow the current manufacturer's instructions to remove personal information and address account locks. Remove personal memory and SIM cards where applicable. Do not give a buyer your account password to solve a lock. For a work or school tablet, ask the authorised administrator to approve the transfer and handle management release. Explain anything unresolved before proceeding.
Ask for consideration rather than assuming a cash value

Recycle an unsuitable tablet through the right route
Use Recycle Your Electricals to find an appropriate collection point and confirm that it accepts tablets. Electrical equipment should not go into general rubbish. Discuss the data situation first if you cannot access or prepare the device.
Do not ship a tablet with a swollen or damaged battery. Royal Mail prohibits damaged or defective lithium batteries. Describe the problem to a suitable local receiving organisation and agree the handling arrangements without trying to remove an internal battery yourself.
